Stephen Crane – In the desert

I’ll just write a little post about the best poem in the world, ever.

Stephen Crane might have been the biggest influence in my poetry, if I had read his poems earlier in life. As it is, I discovered him only recently — but most of my poems look like they are influenced by him even before I ever read him.

Anyway, here it is — the poem I would have loved to have written…

In the Desert

by Stephen Crane

In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, “Is it good, friend?”
“It is bitter–bitter,” he answered;

“But I like it
“Because it is bitter,
“And because it is my heart.”
